An eye-catching rectangular porcelain vase with a tapered neck, richly decorated in white, Imari or cobalt blue, and gold. The central medallion depicts a classic Western hunting motif with dogs in front of yellow buildings, carefully executed in polychrome colors. The vase offers a fascinating mix of Asian craftsmanship and European ideals, making it an expressive decor accent.
The story of this object
The mark underneath the vase is a red seal mark (apocryphal Qianlong mark) written in the traditional Chinese zhuanshu script (seal script). The characters are read from top to bottom, right to left, and usually read: Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi (大清乾隆年制), meaning Made during the Qianlong period of the Great Qing dynasty. However, it is important to note that the mark is apocryphal. This means it was placed there to honor or imitate the famous Qianlong period (1736–1795). The vase's actual motif (a very European and British hunting scene), the quality of the porcelain, and the red seal indicate that the item was made for export in the mid to late 20th century (likely around the 1950s to 1970s).
