Large Hand-Painted Chinese Satsuma-Style Vase

A grand baluster-shaped vase with a flared rim, made in China. The detailed, polychrome decoration is clearly inspired by Japanese Satsuma ceramics and is hand-painted. The motif consists of figurative scenes at a pavilion against a cream-white background, framed by rich gold lines. The shoulder of the vase is adorned with a soft dark section with floral decoration and raised dot patterns, while the base and rim feature reddish-brown borders with ruyi patterns.
The story of this object
During the second half of the 20th century, a large amount of export ceramics was produced in China, borrowing stylistic elements from other Asian traditions. This vase is a typical example of how the sought-after Japanese Satsuma style was successfully imitated to appeal to the Western interior design market.
