A decorative bulbous urn with a matching lid, of the ginger jar type. The surface is adorned with a deeply carved black relief pattern depicting a bird amidst blooming flora, contrasting against a red, finely patterned ground. The lid finial is shaped like a flower, and the rim edges are bound in brass. The cobalt blue enameling on the inside is a classic feature of Chinese lacquerware on a metal base from the 20th century.
The story of this object
Cinnabar lacquer is a classic Chinese craft where multiple layers of lacquer are applied to a base and then carved by hand. The technique produces a distinct, deep relief. During the 20th century, many of these were produced as prized export items for the Western market.
