An elegant vase in glazed earthenware (faience) featuring the expressive Zwarte Delft decoration (sometimes called Famille Noire). The vase has a classic teardrop-shaped body on a flared foot and a tapered neck. Richly hand-painted with stylized flowers and birds of paradise in vibrant shades of blue, green, yellow, and red against a deep black background. Made by the historic factory Royal Delft in the Netherlands. Model number Z.502 and painted by the artist Rina Stadtman as indicated by the initials RSt on the bottom of the vase. Produced in a very limited edition, making it rare and highly sought after by collectors. We were incredibly lucky to find two identical ones.
The story of this object
De Porceleyne Fles (Royal Delft) was founded in 1653 and is the only remaining factory from Delft's original Golden Age. The Zwarte Delft decorative style was created with inspiration from Chinese Famille Noire enamel. It was introduced in 1978 to celebrate the factory's 325th anniversary and was produced in limited quantities over the following decades, making the pieces highly coveted collector's items.
