A beautiful porcelain ginger jar or ovoid vase with rich polychrome enamel decoration. The vase is crafted in the classic Famille Noire style, where a deep black ground contrasts with vivid motifs of pink lotus flowers, large green lotus leaves, a white crane, and insects. A decorative ruyi border runs around the rim, while the base is adorned with a geometric pattern beneath stylized water waves. An eye-catching interior piece with a strong presence. The lid is missing, but is not needed if used as a vase.

The story of this object

Famille Noire (black family) is a term coined in Europe for Chinese porcelain dominated by a black enamel background. The style originally emerged during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor (1662–1722). During the second half of the 20th century, the technique was frequently revived for high-quality export ceramics to the West, of which this vase is a typical and highly decorative example.
