A very beautiful and solid traditional German beer stein (Bierkrug) in salt-glazed, grey stoneware with an attached pewter lid. The stein is decorated with a detailed, raised relief depiction showing the classic scene of Wilhelm Tell, framed by elegant oak leaf borders. The pewter lid features a sculpted thumb lift and bears a lovely owner inscription. On the underside of the lid, there is an older maker's mark in the shape of a semicircle with the name STRAUS, indicating a German pewterer and metal workshop from the 19th century. This type of craftsmanship and decoration is extremely characteristic of the famous Westerwald ceramics region in Germany.

Salt-glazed stoneware from Westerwald has a rich history dating back centuries. The combination of durable ceramics and a solid pewter lid made these steins both practical drinking vessels and valued status symbols. They were often decorated with historical or mythological scenes reflecting the ideals and stories of the era.
