A baluster-shaped ceramic vase with a classic cream-white glaze. The decoration is richly hand-painted in a typical Asian style with polychrome colors, gold accents, and so-called moriage technique, where the enamel is in raised relief, creating texture. The main motif depicts a figure in striped attire among blossoming branches, framed by detailed geometric borders around the base and shoulder.
The story of this object
The Satsuma style, originally from Japan, became immensely popular in the Western world as an export item during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is characterized by its light, crackled base and lavish decorations, often featuring raised enamel (moriage) that gives the items a distinct, tactile feel.
