This atmospheric votive candle holder from Orrefors, designed by Lars Hellsten, goes by the name Olympiska Elden. The candle holder is cast in solid, high-quality crystal with a coarsely textured surface reminiscent of sparkling ice. On the pillar-like base of the holder, the classic Olympic rings appear in clear relief. The item is in fine vintage condition and diffuses a beautiful, shimmering glow when a candle is lit inside.
The story of this object
Lars Hellsten, active at Orrefors from 1972, is well known for his powerful glass pieces that often draw inspiration from Nordic nature. This candle holder skillfully captures the contrast between the austere cold of ice and the living warmth of fire, a design language that characterized much of late 20th-century Swedish glass art.
